Pickleball in Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts
Vineyard Haven is both the ferry gateway to Martha's Vineyard and the village center of Tisbury. The local pickleball season revolves around three outdoor courts at Lake Street Park, where weekday morning rotations make it possible to join games without bringing a full group. Island players also use year round programs in Oak Bluffs and West Tisbury for instruction, supervised open play, indoor courts, and weather backup.
Where to Play Pickleball in Vineyard Haven
- Lake Street Park, 223 Lake Street, has three outdoor pickleball courts open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The public open play rotation runs Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon without reservations. At other times, courts are reserved through CourtReserve. Islanders and visitors can create a free Pay As You Play account and reserve one hour for $20, while Tisbury taxpayers can choose a town pickleball membership. The outdoor season generally runs from May into November, weather permitting.
- Vineyard Family Tennis, 618 Barnes Road in Oak Bluffs, is a useful nearby choice for supervised games and instruction. Its recurring pickleball program includes Learn to Play on Monday and Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m., Moving on Up skill sessions on Monday and Thursday from 4 to 5 p.m., and supervised open play Wednesday from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Each session has a published per person fee and registration link.
- Airport Fitness Martha's Vineyard, 24 Airport Road in West Tisbury, has four pickleball courts and accepts the general public. Court reservations are open to members and nonmembers. The program includes advance registration open play for levels 2.8 through 3.5, beginner and intermediate clinics, private lessons, camps, tournaments, and events. This is the practical island option when indoor play or a larger weekly program matters.
Beginner Pickleball and Lessons
New players should start with the Learn to Play session at Vineyard Family Tennis. The class is specifically for first time players and meets Monday and Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m. for $35 per person. It creates a clear path from instruction into the facility's supervised open play once scoring, movement, and basic mechanics feel comfortable.
Airport Fitness offers another structured starting point, with beginner clinics Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. Eight places are offered in each clinic, and registration is available from its pickleball page. Tisbury taxpayers with the appropriate town membership can also use the seasonal adult clinics at Lake Street Park. Players who prefer individual instruction can use the Coaches section.
Open Play, Clinics, and Island Events
Lake Street Park is the in town open play anchor. The Monday, Wednesday, and Friday rotation from 8 a.m. to noon is the simplest way to meet Vineyard Haven players, and no court reservation is needed during those hours. From late June through late August, town pickleball clinics reserve the courts Tuesday and Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m.
For a hosted format, Vineyard Family Tennis runs supervised open play twice each week. Airport Fitness offers advance registration open play throughout the year, with current sessions on Tuesday evenings, Wednesday evenings, Thursday mornings and evenings, and Saturday mornings. Its open play is designed for advanced beginners through intermediate players, levels 2.8 through 3.5, and costs $18 for pickleball members or $32 for nonmembers for two hours.
Visiting Vineyard Haven and Looking for a Game?
If you are visiting alone, begin with the open play rotation at Lake Street Park on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday from 8 a.m. to noon. The rotation supplies the best direct route into a local outdoor game without arriving with three partners. Outside those hours, create a Pay As You Play CourtReserve account, reserve one of the three courts for $20, and bring partners.
If your schedule misses the town rotation, register for supervised open play at Vineyard Family Tennis or an advance registration open play at Airport Fitness. Vineyard Family Tennis suits players who want a hosted session, while Airport Fitness is the stronger weather proof option and clearly accepts nonmembers. Ferry schedules and island traffic can add travel time, so leave enough time to reach Oak Bluffs or West Tisbury before the session begins.
